At the office of Douglas G. Hope, DDS, we specialize in comprehensive and emergency dentistry. If you’ve been in an accident and you have a broken or chipped tooth, we’re here to help. Our team put together some information to help in the event that you have a damaged your tooth:
What Should I Do if My Tooth Is Chipped or Broken?
Above all else, remember to remain calm and make an appointment as soon as possible with Dr. Hope. Next, you can address any pain, bleeding, or swelling can be treated with an ice pack applied to the exterior of the mouth. Pain can also be mitigated by acetaminophen, ibuprofen or other over-the-counter pain medication. Aspirin should not be used, however, as it is a blood thinner and can prevent proper clotting.
If your tooth is bleeding, you can use clean cotton balls or gauze to absorb the blood, which should stop flowing within an hour or so. If the blood flow does not stop, consider visiting an urgent care facility, or the emergency room.

What Are the My Treatment Options for Chipped or Broken Teeth?
The treatment required for a broken or chipped tooth depends on the severity of the damage.
Minor chipped teeth may simply require cosmetic restoration with a treatment such as dental bonding, a dental crown, or a porcelain veneer. This will restore the cosmetic appearance of the tooth and ensure that it remains strong and healthy.
If your tooth has been damaged more severely and the interior pulp has been exposed, it may need to be treated with a root canal (to remove any potential bacterial infections) and capped with a dental crown. This will cover and protect the underlying structure.
In rare cases, a tooth may need to be extracted and replaced with a partial denture, a dental bridge or a dental implant. This is usually only necessary if a tooth has been significantly cracked and damaged and the patient has waited for several days before seeking emergency treatment.
