Escondido Periodontal Care

Periodontal Care in Escondido, CA

Gum disease is estimated to affect more than half of all Americans. While it is relatively harmless in its most common form (gingivitis), if it’s left untreated, it can easily progress into a disease that threatens the health of your mouth, or even your life. That’s why it’s important to seek periodontal care from an experienced general dentist such as Dr. Douglas G. Hope, and get treatment for gingivitis and periodontal disease before it destroys your oral health.

The Basics Of Gum Disease

Gum disease is, primarily, caused by poor oral hygiene. Factors such as failing to brush and floss regularly, eating a sugar-rich diet, and smoking can all contribute to the development of gum disease.

The disease occurs when the plaque on your gums begins to build up, and hardens into tartar. The bacteria in tartar then begin to attack your healthy gum tissue, causing inflammation and a variety of other oral health issues.

Recognizing Periodontal Disease

The most minor form of periodontal disease is called “gingivitis”. It usually presents with symptoms such as tender and swollen gums, bleeding while brushing, persistent bad breath, and gum recession. As the disease progresses, the symptoms get much worse. If you have a more severe case of periodontal disease, you may notice symptoms such as loosening of teeth in their sockets, pus between the teeth, pain and sensitivity when chewing, shifting of teeth and a bad taste in your mouth.

Treating Periodontal Disease

It is absolutely essential to be treated for periodontal disease as soon as possible. This is because once the disease progresses past a certain point, it cannot be reversed. A few common treatments used to control periodontal disease include:

  • Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) – This is the most common treatment, and can often resolve minor cases of gingivitis. Dr. Douglas Hope will use advanced dental tools to scrape away tartar, and smooth out the roots of your teeth to prevent further infections.
  • Antibiotics – Antibiotics are usually delivered alongside deep cleanings, to help fight the bacterial infection of the gums.
  • Gum flap surgery (pocket reduction) – In more severe cases of periodontal disease, “pockets” form underneath your teeth. Bacteria thrive in these pockets, so gum flap surgery is used to fold the gums back, clean these areas, and suture the gums back in place, to prevent further infection.

Restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry take into account the finer details of correcting tooth damage and wear and improving the overall look, feel and function of the mouth. If more than half of the tooth’s biting surface has been damaged, a porcelain, gold or composite resin inlay can be used to fill inside the cusp tips of the tooth. An onlay is more substantial, used to extend out over the cusps of the teeth. Each dental restoration is completed with CAD/CAM technology for results that are natural looking and built to last.
