Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

People with missing teeth have various replacement options to choose from, but dental implants are, without a doubt, one of the most popular ones. Understandably so – implants are long-lasting, feel and look natural, and will preserve your natural jawbone. However, they are not the right solution for everyone.

How can you tell if you’re a good candidate for dental implants? Keep reading to find out!

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

The first thing our Escondido dentist will do during your initial appointment is ensure that you check all the marks that would make you a good candidate for implants. He will examine things like:

  • The Number of Teeth You Are Missing

Dental implants are often used to replace one missing tooth. They’re usually recommended since, unlike a dental bridge, an implant will also prevent bone loss and offer a more comfortable and natural-looking solution.

But, if you have multiple missing teeth, you will have to determine if an implant-supported bridge or partial/total denture is the best option for you.

  • Sufficient Bone Density

One of the first things Dr. Hope will check for is the amount of bone mass you have. Dental implants need jaw bone mass to support the implant and ensure it will anchor to sustain the rest of the restoration.

If you don’t have enough bone mass, you may be able to rebuild using a bone graft from another part of your body or a donor.

  • Healthy Gums

Healthy gums are another requirement for dental implants. The principle is similar to the one of healthy bone mass. The gum tissue will need to grow around the implant to support it. If you have an infection or your gums are receding, this would not be possible, and your implant could fail.

  • Good Oral Hygiene Habits

The implant itself may not be natural, but it will need the same care as your natural teeth to ensure its longevity. Without daily brushing and flossing, the gums around the implant could get infected and affect its integrity.

What If Dental Implants Are Not Right for Me?

Most people would still be able to get an implant even if their oral health is not in top condition. Dr. Hope may recommend a few additional procedures before he can continue with the implant process.

That said, some patients are not good candidates for implants. For example, people with severe bone density loss, certain health conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis, or blood clotting disorders, or those undergoing radiation therapy aren’t suitable candidates for dental implants. In this case, Dr. Hope will help you find the right replacement option for you, such as dentures or dental bridges.
