Here’s a number that makes us really sad:
Nearly 90% of adults aged 20 and older have at least one cavity.
The reason this statistic makes us so sad is that cavities can be easily prevented. Don’t know how?
We’ll tell you all about it in this short blog post.
So, What Are Cavities?
A cavity is an area on the surface of your teeth that has been affected by bacteria. As these harmful bacteria keep eating away at your tooth’s enamel, small holes will eventually form, and the bacteria can now penetrate the inner layers of your teeth and create more damage.
If a cavity is not treated in time, it will get larger and larger and cause pain, infection, and eventually tooth loss.
Signs You May Have a Cavity
Here’s the problem: cavities usually don’t show any signs in their early stages. That’s why it is so important to go to regular check-ups. The dentist can run different tests and exams to see if a cavity is forming and can treat it before it gets to affect your tooth.
If the cavity wasn’t treated in time and got bigger, then you may experience some of these symptoms:
- Toothache that can appear suddenly
- Tooth sensitivity
- Sensitivity and pain when eating or drinking something hot or cold
- Holes and pits in your teeth
- Stains on the surface of your tooth that can be brown, black, or white
- Pain when biting or chewing
How to Prevent Cavities
As we said, cavities can be prevented. Moreover, you can even stop their evolution if you detect them in time.
And the good news is that preventing cavities is fairly simple:
- Pay Attention to Your Oral Hygiene
This might be one of the most important things you can do to prevent cavities. Brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Floss and rinse as well to make sure you got all the food particles that might be stuck in between your teeth.
- Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Ideally, you should see your dentist twice a year for routine check-ups and professional cleanings. This way, the dentist can remove stubborn plaque and tartar that could facilitate the formation of cavities. They can also treat any small cavities and make sure they won’t affect your oral health.
- Consider Sealants
Dental sealants are a coating applied on the surface of the tooth to protect them against cavities.
