How Teeth Whitening Works – Everything You Need To Know

Are you thinking about getting teeth whitening in Escondido from the office of Dr. Douglas G. Hope? If so, you may have questions about the process, how it works, and what to expect. In this blog, we’ll go over all the details, and answer a few common FAQs about teeth whitening treatment, too.

Peroxides – The Chemicals That Are The Secret To Professional Teeth Whitening

So, how does teeth whitening work? All professional-grade whitening products contain peroxides, such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Peroxides are special types of volatile oxygen molecules.

When these molecules come into contact with stains on your teeth, they cause a powerful reaction. This breaks the chemical bonds that hold the stain onto your enamel. This “bleaches” the stain away, and restores the natural brightness of your enamel.

While there are some other technologies used to improve the effectiveness of peroxide, such as the Zoom blue LED light we use at our office, the basic process is always the same. By applying peroxide-based whiteners to your teeth, you can eliminate stains and restore your smile.

We Offer Professional In-Office And Take-Home Whitening With Zoom

At our office, we offer both in-office whitening and take-home whitening using Philips Zoom products. Zoom teeth whitening uses a special combination of peroxide and other active ingredients to maximize the effectiveness of your whitening treatment while reducing side effects like teeth sensitivity.

In-office whitening is the best choice if you want fast results. Take-home whitening provides the same level of brightness. Though it takes longer to whiten your smile, some patients prefer to whiten their teeth at home, particularly if they have a busy schedule.

Have More Questions About Teeth Whitening? We’ve Got Answers!

  • Can all stains be removed with teeth whitening? No. Some very deep or internal stains cannot be removed with teeth whitening, though teeth whitening may reduce their intensity. If you have very severe stains, Dr. Hope may recommend an alternative treatment, such as veneers or dental crowns.

  • Does teeth whitening cause sensitivity? Yes. Whitening-induced sensitivity is a common side effect of the teeth whitening process. However, it will go away within a few days after your treatment concludes. At the office of Dr. Douglas G. Hope, we also use Zoom whitening products, which are formulated to reduce sensitivity.

  • Can I whiten my teeth with over-the-counter products? ADA-accepted whitening kits and toothpaste contain small amounts of peroxide, and can whiten your teeth safely. However, they will not offer the same results as professional in-office or take-home whitening. You also should never purchase any whitening product that’s not accepted by the ADA. Using over-the-counter whitening kits improperly can damage your teeth and gums.
