Can You Whiten Crowns?

The beauty of cosmetic dentistry is that you don’t have to go through big changes to improve the appearance of your teeth significantly. Sometimes, something as simple as a teeth whitening treatment can make a big difference.

What if you want to brighten your smile a bit but also have a crown? Can you still whiten your teeth?

Let’s find out the answer!

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are caps placed over the natural tooth to restore and protect it following root canal treatment, for example. They can also be used if your tooth has been damaged and needs to be restored or to complete a dental implant.

Crowns are usually made out of porcelain or composite resin. If you’ve opted for porcelain crowns, then you may be pleased to learn that they are extremely durable and don’t stain easily.

That said, if you’ve had them for a long time, they might have lost some of their initial color and brightness. So, what can you do about it?

Can Dental Crowns Be Whitened?

The short answer is no, dental crowns can’t be whitened. Crowns and veneers don’t respond to any whitening treatment, professional or at-home. If you try to whiten your teeth, you will most likely get a very odd look – your natural teeth will look whiter and brighter, while your crown will remain the same color.

But not all hope is lost.

While you can’t whiten veneers, you can still improve the appearance of your teeth.

If your crown is discolored, then it’s probably approaching the end of its lifespan anyway. Your dentist may recommend replacing it with a new one. After the dentist removes the old crown, request a whitening treatment to get to the desired shade. Then, have the new crown designed in the new color of your natural teeth.

You can also maintain your white and bright smile for longer by practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding staining foods and beverages, and going to regular dental check-ups for professional cleanings.
